Weekly Learning Adventure
Math
We looked at the tips and tricks for multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000 and continued working with compatible (or friendly) numbers in multiplication.
Grade 6's learned about Least Common Multiple (LCM) and Greatest Common Factor (GCF) and practiced some problem solving with these concepts.
Some examples:
1. During a car race, two competitors will stop to fill up the fuel tank. One does it every 4 laps, and the other every 5 laps. When the race begins, after how many laps will they meet at the fuel station, if they travel at the same speed?
2. Veronica is making emergency-preparedness kits to share with friends. She has 20 bottles of water and 12 cans of food, which she would like to distribute equally among the kits, with nothing left over. What is the greatest number of kits Veronica can make?
Science
Our wetlands projects are in the process of being evaluated. We are looking forward to show and explain our learning to you at the upcoming student led conferences.
This week, we discussed Remembrance Day and why it is important to think about veterans and the sacrifices they have made. We created Postcards for Peace with heartfelt messages and pictures. Ms. Robichaud has delivered the cards to the Royal Canadian Legion.
We returned to the Tale of Despereaux, where we were introduced to a new character, Miggery Sow. She is a human girl, treated unkindly by her mother, father and "Uncle". Ask me about how she came to live with her "Uncle".
Each week, we have been collecting new vocabulary words from the Tale of Despereaux. We are using the context of the story to make a prediction about the vocabulary before looking up the words in the dictionary. Ask me about the meaning of the words "distasteful" and "capacious".
Social
We created a class wreath to lay at the Remembrance Day Service. We learned interesting facts about poppies. Do you know what colour of poppy was created to remember animals in the war?
We have been working on our Regions group research projects. We all logged into our edu (Google) email accounts and created slides to accompany our presentations. We will be starting our presentations next week. Ask me to tell you about my region and to see my slides.
Souper Stars
We talked about grocery shopping and how to make sure that we are buying the healthiest food for the lowest price. We learned that it is important to make a shopping list and avoid impulse buys.
