Welcome to Room 14's
Weekly Update
We also started working on a multi-step problem involving an imaginary sale of frozen yogurt cones at Ranchlands School. We had to estimate how many cones we could sell, calculate the cost of our raw materials and figure out how much profit we made. Ask me about my profit!
We continued to focus on non-fiction reading and learned how to create summaries of articles using "Who, What, When, Where, Why and How". We learned that sometimes we need to use inferencing to think about why a world event has happened. We read an article about scientists trying to save giant pandas from going extinct and also read about children around the world trying to raise awareness about climate change. Ask me why the scientists are dressed up in panda suits.
We are almost to the end of the Tale of Despereaux. The princess has been taken to the dungeon and it is up to Despereaux to save her! We will find out what happens in the end of the book this week.
Reminder: Wetlands tests need to be returned Monday with an adults signature. Make sure to do you corrections in a different colour.
Social
We have been discussing current events. Current events helps students understand the importance of people, events, and issues in the news; it stimulates students to explore and learn more about the news, and to pay attention to the news they see and hear outside of our school.
We started working on being able to analyze cartoon pictures.
1. Brainstorm- Look at the cartoon below. What do you think of when you see it? Write your ideas in keywords.
2. Discuss- What /Who is being shown? Is there a celebration? What kind of mood is being represented? Why? Which elements does the cartoonist use? What is the cartoonist's intention? Do you like the cartoon? Give reasons.
3. Write an analysis.
Math
We continued working on our math centres reviewing the concepts of place value, multiplication, multiples and factors as well as problem solving. We also had a quiz on the above topics. We will go over the quiz on Monday.
