Math

This week we reviewed the concept of volume which is the amount of space an object takes up. The formula for volume of a rectangular prism is length × width × height. It is measured in ㎤.

We also started looking at angles and how to measure them with a protractor. It was fun to learn how to use a new tool! Ask me about acute, right and obtuse angles.

L.A.

We looked at the concept of synecdoche which is using a part to represent a whole e.g using the word "wheels" to represent a car, or using the word "dough" to represent money.
We also continued working on preparing for our debate on the topic of uniforms in schools. Ask me if I am arguing the pro or con side of the issue.

Science
This week in science, we looked at Trees and Forests. We learned about how everything in a forest is interconnected, i.e. how everything depends on everything else. We also discussed food chains and food webs. Ask us about primary, secondary, and tertiary consumers.

Social
This week in Social Studies, we began reviewing the Iroquois Confederacy. We learned that this form of democracy was very different from the Ancient Athens model. Ask us some of the important differences between the two.
Here is a link that shows a Mohawk village from about 1600.

Special Events

We had a beautiful day for our field trip to Belvedere Parkway. We met some new friends and enjoyed an outdoor snack.

Safety update: We had both a fire drill and a lockdown practice this week. We knew exactly what to do in both situations. Great job Room 14!

May 21-24

Welcome to Room 14!

Volunteers needed for our whole school field trip to Belvedere Parkway School in the morning of Thursday May 30th. Please let Mrs. Kis or Ms. Drever know if you are able to volunteer or contact ranchlandsparentvolunteers@gmail.com

The volunteer tea is on Friday June 7 from 10:30-12:00. All volunteers are invited to attend! Please RSVP by June 1st.

Math
This week we looked at the relationship between area and perimeter and learned how to calculate both. Grade 5's worked on calculating the area and perimeter of rectangles and Grade 6's worked on the area and perimeter of many shapes, such as hexagon, pentagons and equilateral triangles.
L.A.
We started preparing for another class debate this week on the topic of uniforms in schools. Ask me about the pros and cons of this issue.

Social
We continued our investigation into Ancient Athens this week. In particular, we looked at the Greek God Hercules and the myth of Arachne. We also learned about social networking in Ancient Athens, which is much different than today’s version! If you are interested in watching more videos on Ancient Athens, here is a link to a great website:

Science

We had a great week learning about Evidence and Investigation. First, we learned about fingerprints and the different patterns that we can have, i.e. loop, whorl, arch. We then did an activity where the students collected their own fingerprints using graphite. Ask us which pattern we have! You could also do this activity at home and examine your family members fingerprint patterns. We also looked at how footprints can provide evidence in a crime scene. For example, when a person is running, their footprints are typically farther apart with deeper toe marks.

Visit to H.D. Cartwright
The grade 6s were lucky enough to go for a tour at HD Cartwright today! We were able to see several classes, such as foods, humanities, and music. The students were able to get an insight into life in junior high!

May 13-17

Welcome to Room 14!

Volunteers needed for our whole school field trip to Belvedere Parkway School in the morning of Thursday May 30th. Please let Mrs. Kis or Ms. Robichaud know if you are able to volunteer or contact ranchlandsparentvolunteers@gmail.com

The volunteer tea is on Friday June 7 from 10:30-12:00. All volunteers are invited to attend!

Math
This week we focused on probability. Grade 5's identified outcomes that are more and less likely with coloured blocks in paper bags and spinners. Grade 6's worked on theoretical and experimental probability with dice and spinners.

We also continued our work on reading graphs and creating our own graphs. Grade 5's created bar graphs and Grade 6's worked on line graphs.

Both grades started working with equations with unknown variables e.g     a+6= 9
Grade 6's learned how to find the pattern rule in an input/output chart and write the algebraic equation.
Wow! That was a busy week in math!
Language Arts
We practiced our reading comprehension through practice PATs for Grade 6's and readings with comprehension questions for grade 5's. We are practicing looking for similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole and synecdoche in our reading. We also came back to our book club centres to try to finish off our novels before the end of the year.

Science
We began a review of the Evidence and Investigation unit. We talked about different aspects of a Crime Scene, including types of evidence, people involved in a crime and specialists who can be called to help. We were shown a picture of a staged crime scene. We then had to explain what types of evidence we would collect and why. We also did an activity on handwriting analysis. We had to match two writing samples by examining different qualities of handwriting. For example, pressure, slant of writing, spacing, etc.

Social
We continued our investigation into Ancient Athens. We completed an activity about a day in the life in Ancient Athens. Here is a glimpse of what life would have looked like:

You are a Spartan! Be proud! You have endured unbelievable pain and hardship to become a superior Spartan soldier and citizen! Taken away from your parents at age 7, you lived a harsh and often brutal life in the soldiers’ barracks. You were beaten by older children who started fights to help make you tough and strong. You were often whipped in front of groups of other Spartans, including your parents, but never cried out in pain. You were given very little food, but encouraged to steal food, instead. If caught stealing, you were beaten. To avoid severe pain, you learned to be cunning, to lie, to cheat, to steal, and how to get away with it! Some of you are members of the Spartan secret police and enjoy spying on slaves. If you find a slave who is showing signs of leadership, you have orders to kill them immediately. You are fierce, capable, and proud of your strength. You know you are superior and are delighted to be Spartan!

In School Program: Mobile Escape Room

The grade 6s and Room 22 had so much fun working through the Mobile Escape Room. We were able to try and escape from 2 different rooms: The Sunken Ship and The Pharaoh. The students had to work together to solve puzzles and find clues. There are many Escape Rooms in Calgary, which would make for a great family activity!

June 17-21

Welcome to Room 14! It was another busy week. We had our last PAT on Monday. We finished up lots of bits of work and started a major ...
