December 17th to 21st

Welcome to Room 14's
Weekly Adventure

Have a happy holiday!!!

L.A.

We finally finished the Tale of Despereaux and started to write a book review to share our personal opinions on the book. Ask me how the story turned out for our main characters of Despereaux, Roscuro and Miggery Sow. We also began working on an author study that will be part of a larger book project when we return in January. Ask me which author I am studying.

Math

Let's start off our Estimation 180 challenge! If Safwan is 1.71 m (or 171 cm), then how tall is Bernice?

If possible, remember to take a picture at home for your own estimation challenge and send it to hakis@educbe.ca. Don't forget to do a count of your estimation items so we can share them in class.

This week, we finished up our math centres, in preparation for starting integers, order of operations and division in the New Year.

Social

We wrapped up our Regions Unit. In the New Year we will jumping into democracy. We will be exploring how democratic principles are reflected in local and provincial governments. We are looking forward to examining historical models of democracy and the political roles played by citizens in the past and today.

Health

Shhhhhh ….it’s a secret. This week we helped our buddies be “kindness ninjas”. We placed kindness posters all around the school and observed how our acts of kindness but smiles on other people faces. It felt good to see others happy. Twinkles was so proud of the kindness in our school, she wrote Mrs. Wickland a letter declaring a PJ day! It helped us understand how our actions affect not only ourselves but everyone around us. Did you know that our choices, whether good or bad, can touch a lot of people?

Other
- Our friends are learning how to be the school's technology experts. Kadjaye and Hardik helped with all the singing this week. Thank you for being leaders within our school.

- Have a safe and restful winter break.
- Students return to classes on Tuesday January 8th, 2019

L.A/Health
We continued reading the Tale of Despereaux. Will Despereaux be successful in his quest to save the Princess Pea? What will happen to the other characters? We will find out when we finish the book next week.

We finished up our health projects on topics ranging from online safety, health and nutrition and etiquette. Next week, we will do a self evaluation and a peer evaluation.

Math
We reviewed our math quiz especially the concepts of expanded and standard notation when working with place value up to millions and billions.

Standard notation:  1 246 327

Expanded notation: 1 000 000+200 000+40 000+ 6000+300+20+7

We also continued work on our math centres which we will finish up before the break. Ask me about the most interesting centre so far.

Social
Ask me what is very important on Monday.... (HINT- we have our Regions Quiz). There is a Regions Review Powerpoint available, the link is on the blog. We have also completed a review booklet and had a trivia showdown with Room 22.

Science
We started exploring electricity. We learned the ways (sources) electricity is generated. We documented the generated electricity in our country on a map of Canada. This allowed us to compared the differences and discuss reasons why various areas in our country differ.

French
We started learning winter words and songs. Try finding French speaking radio stations and TV stations and see how many words you can understand.

Other

We helped make kindness ninja masks with our grade 1 and 2 buddies today. Next week we are going to help them spread sneaky acts of kindness around the school.

We completed our first round of TSN today.

Weekly Update
Math

We continued working on our math centres reviewing the concepts of place value, multiplication, multiples and factors as well as problem solving. We also had a quiz on the above topics. We will go over the quiz on Monday.

We also started working on a multi-step problem involving an imaginary sale of frozen yogurt cones at Ranchlands School. We had to estimate how many cones we could sell, calculate the cost of our raw materials and figure out how much profit we made. Ask me about my profit!

Language Arts

We continued to focus on non-fiction reading and learned how to create summaries of articles using "Who, What, When, Where, Why and How". We learned that sometimes we need to use inferencing to think about why a world event has happened. We read an article about scientists trying to save giant pandas from going extinct and also read about children around the world trying to raise awareness about climate change. Ask me why the scientists are dressed up in panda suits.

We are almost to the end of the Tale of Despereaux. The princess has been taken to the dungeon and it is up to Despereaux to save her! We will find out what happens in the end of the book this week.

Science

We have been investigating electricity. Ask me about the different sources we have discussed. We will be tracking the amount of electricity we use in a day in preparation for out "electricity out" day.

Reminder: Wetlands tests need to be returned Monday with an adults signature. Make sure to do you corrections in a different colour.

Social

We have been discussing current events. Current events helps students understand the importance of people, events, and issues in the news; it stimulates students to explore and learn more about the news, and to pay attention to the news they see and hear outside  of our school.

We started working on being able to analyze cartoon pictures.

1. Brainstorm- Look at the cartoon below. What do you think of when you see it? Write your ideas in keywords.

2. Discuss- What /Who is being shown? Is there a celebration? What kind of mood is being represented? Why? Which elements does the cartoonist use? What is the cartoonist's intention?  Do you like the cartoon? Give reasons.

3. Write an analysis.
