June 17-21

Welcome to Room 14!

It was another busy week. We had our last PAT on Monday. We finished up lots of bits of work and started a major clean up! Grade 5's also got to check out the Mobile Escape Room this week.

Events next week:

Tuesday June 25 is the grade 6 farewell, at 10:15 in the gym. There will be a special lunch offered for grade 5 and 6 students and fun activities in the afternoon.

Wednesday June 26 is the last day of school. In the morning, we will have the school sports day and in the afternoon, the parent run carnival. Thanks to parent council for organizing this special afternoon. Report cards will be handed out at the very end of the day on Wednesday.

This week we finished the last of our school uniform debates. Great job everyone! We did some capacity measurements and finished up our geometry city projects. We also played some fun word games.

June 10 to 14

Welcome to Room 14!

Our week was very busy with 4 grade 6 PATs. We are all finished with social studies, math part A and B and reading. On Monday we have our science exam and then we are all finished with PATs!

L.A.

This week, some of our groups presented their debate arguments. Our topic is whether schools should have uniforms or not. We prepared speeches and ideas for rebuttal. The groups who have debated have done a great job! The remaining groups will present next week.

Math

We continued working on our geometry city projects this week. Grade 5's also looked at building rectangular prisms with specific volumes and explored the edges, faces and vertices of 3D shapes.

Social studies
While the grade 6’s have been writing PATs, the grade 5’s have been working on their own project. They are researching a National Park in Canada and creating a brochure! Some of the national parks students chose are: Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, and Pacific Rim National Park (my personal favourite). Students have to research the terrain, landforms, wildlife, among other topics. I am so excited to see the finished product!
We also continued working on our Civilization Project. Students were required to choose one of the forms of democracy we learned about this year, e.g. Canadian, Ancient Athens, Iroquois Confederacy. Students had to include gender roles, law/order, organization, laws, and policies on education.

Science

In order to prepare for Monday’s science PAT, we continued learning about sky science. We reviewed the phases of the moon. We labelled a drawing and coloured in the phases. We also learned about how sundials work.

June 3-7

Welcome to Room 14

Important reminders: Grade 6 PATs start next week:

Tuesday, June 11- Social Studies
Wednesday, June 12- Math Part B (problem solving)
Thursday, June 13- L.A. Part B (reading)
Friday, June 14- Math Part A (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
Monday, June 17- Science

It is very important to get a good night's sleep and eat a good breakfast before the tests. Please arrive at school on time as the tests will start right away.

To review, check out the practice questions at:

To review math content, go to Spy Guys:

Math

We learned about how to name different types of triangles including equilateral, scalene and isosceles. Did you know that you can also classify triangles by their angles? Then they are called acute, right or obtuse triangles.

We also learned that the angles in a triangle add to 180 degrees and the angles in a quadrilateral add to 360 degrees.

Grade 5's looked at different types of quadrilaterals and how to classify them by looking at horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines.

L.A.
We continued preparing for our debate on the topic of uniforms in schools. Next week, the debate is on!

Social

As a review for Social Studies, the students are creating a new civilization! This new civilization could be under water, in space, underground, or wherever else we can think of! Students are required to include a form of government that we have learned about in their new civilization. They can choose from democracy, Ancient Athenian democracy, or the Iroquois Confederacy. We have to include the positives about our form of government, and the negatives as well. For example, in Ancient Athenian democracy, women could not vote or be a part of the Council of 500. We are so excited to read about the new civilizations!

Science

Room 14 and 22 had an excellent conversation about sky science on Friday! I was so impressed at the thoughtfulness and curiosity from all the students! We talked about stars, supernovas, and black holes. We also learned that the nearest black hole (which was very recently photographed for the first time in history) is 27 000 light years away! This being our last science unit to review, I was so happy with the level of student engagement. We also reviewed the moon phases. Ask your children to explain “waxing is the right thing to do!”.

Art

We used the math concepts of transformation and tessellations to create original works of art.

Special Events

Patrollers enjoyed a fantastic day at Heritage Park for the patrol picnic!

May 27-31

Welcome to Room 14

The volunteer tea is on Friday June 7 from 10:30-12:00. All volunteers are invited to attend! Please RSVP by June 1st.

The Patrol Picnic is Thursday June 6. All forms are due back on Monday June 3.

Remember Grade 6 PAT's are coming up very shortly. For review questions, visit:

Math

This week we reviewed the concept of volume which is the amount of space an object takes up. The formula for volume of a rectangular prism is length × width × height. It is measured in ㎤.

We also started looking at angles and how to measure them with a protractor. It was fun to learn how to use a new tool! Ask me about acute, right and obtuse angles.

L.A.

We looked at the concept of synecdoche which is using a part to represent a whole e.g using the word "wheels" to represent a car, or using the word "dough" to represent money.
We also continued working on preparing for our debate on the topic of uniforms in schools. Ask me if I am arguing the pro or con side of the issue.

Science
This week in science, we looked at Trees and Forests. We learned about how everything in a forest is interconnected, i.e. how everything depends on everything else. We also discussed food chains and food webs. Ask us about primary, secondary, and tertiary consumers.

Social
This week in Social Studies, we began reviewing the Iroquois Confederacy. We learned that this form of democracy was very different from the Ancient Athens model. Ask us some of the important differences between the two.
Here is a link that shows a Mohawk village from about 1600.

Special Events

We had a beautiful day for our field trip to Belvedere Parkway. We met some new friends and enjoyed an outdoor snack.

Safety update: We had both a fire drill and a lockdown practice this week. We knew exactly what to do in both situations. Great job Room 14!

May 21-24

Welcome to Room 14!

Volunteers needed for our whole school field trip to Belvedere Parkway School in the morning of Thursday May 30th. Please let Mrs. Kis or Ms. Drever know if you are able to volunteer or contact ranchlandsparentvolunteers@gmail.com

The volunteer tea is on Friday June 7 from 10:30-12:00. All volunteers are invited to attend! Please RSVP by June 1st.

Math
This week we looked at the relationship between area and perimeter and learned how to calculate both. Grade 5's worked on calculating the area and perimeter of rectangles and Grade 6's worked on the area and perimeter of many shapes, such as hexagon, pentagons and equilateral triangles.
L.A.
We started preparing for another class debate this week on the topic of uniforms in schools. Ask me about the pros and cons of this issue.

Social
We continued our investigation into Ancient Athens this week. In particular, we looked at the Greek God Hercules and the myth of Arachne. We also learned about social networking in Ancient Athens, which is much different than today’s version! If you are interested in watching more videos on Ancient Athens, here is a link to a great website:

Science

We had a great week learning about Evidence and Investigation. First, we learned about fingerprints and the different patterns that we can have, i.e. loop, whorl, arch. We then did an activity where the students collected their own fingerprints using graphite. Ask us which pattern we have! You could also do this activity at home and examine your family members fingerprint patterns. We also looked at how footprints can provide evidence in a crime scene. For example, when a person is running, their footprints are typically farther apart with deeper toe marks.

Visit to H.D. Cartwright
The grade 6s were lucky enough to go for a tour at HD Cartwright today! We were able to see several classes, such as foods, humanities, and music. The students were able to get an insight into life in junior high!
