March 11th to 15th

Welcome to Room 14's
Weekly Adventure
Parents, please remember we are looking for volunteers for our field trip to Spaceport on April 15.

This weeks blog brought to you by Aditya and Rayyaan!

L.A.

We have been focusing on story planning this week. We have had a lot of fun working with the idea of plausibility in stories. For example, for the setting of downtown Calgary, we would expect to see businesspeople, restaurants and the Calgary Tower. We would not expect to see dinosaurs, aliens or flying wizards. If we wanted to add these ideas into our stories, our readers would need some more explanation. We were also working on recognizing past and present tense in our word work. We continued reading in our book clubs and then doing a centre to show our understanding. We finished off our photography projects and will share with you at conferences next week.

Math

We have been working on our decimal Disneyland project, finding our flights, hotels, transportation, food, and park passes. We have needed to use a lot of addition and multiplication to find out the cost of our trip. This project is due on Tuesday.
Grade 5's also did a quick review of how to add and subtract with decimals and Grade 6's took a look at multiplication and division of decimals and how to work with percentage.

Here are some great sites if you are looking for an online review of grade 5 and 6 math concepts:

Science

We have started our centres on electricity.  Some of our centres include making electricity with pickle's and lemons.  We were also making electricity with vinegar, sugar, salt, and baking soda solutions. The pictures below show us completing some hands on experiments. We have been having fun being scientists.

Social

In social we have been working on learning how to pull important information out of articles. Here is a quick...

POP QUIZ!

1. Name the four Canadian rights and freedoms. (Ask your child for the answers)

2.  The Magna Carta is also known as the ____________________________?

French

We have been working hard on our French houses building and labeling. We are down to adding the final details such as furniture, wallpaper, painting, and people.  Our class has been working hard to finish the houses before conferences  and we are excited to share these with you.

March 4-8

Welcome to Room 14!

Spaceport Field Trip

We are looking for parent volunteers for our Spaceport Field Trip on April 15! Please contact Mrs. Kis or Ms. Robichaud if you are able to help us out.

Student Led Conference

Please remember that student led conferences are on Thursday March 21 and Friday March 22. Log into Powerschool to book your time.

Math

Congratulations to Rayyaan who has also figured out how to get 24 in our super challenging math problem using 1, 3,4 and 6 to make 24.
This week we tried a hands on problem called skyscrapers. We had to be able to build skyscrapers that fit the requirements of only being able to see 1, 2 or 3 from the side. It's a little complicated to explain here- parents can give it a try at our upcoming conferences.

We also looked at how to place decimals on number lines and started a project where we are pretending to go on a trip to Disneyland. We will use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of decimals to spend our budget of $3000 per person in our family. We have learned some things about researching travel options, such as that plane tickets are sold per person, but hotels charge by the room! Parents, maybe you should include us in your next vacation planning.

Language Arts

We practiced working with suffixes such as -er, -or, and -ion to change the meaning of root words.

We also started a focus on story writing through discussing what makes a good story problem. We brainstormed some ideas for story problems using picture prompts. Next week we will discuss how to include the setting in our stories.

French

We are making progress on our french house projects. Some of us have started to add our vocabulary labels and additional details. Below are some pictures from our construction, vocabulary labeling, and houses.

Social

We are working continuing our work on The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  We are learning and applying different strategies to help us pull out important information when we are reading. Today we worked on the task of using highlighters as a tool to emphasize relevant information versus all information. We also talked about how our brains work differently and we need to try different ways to learn what works best us as individual learners.

Special Guests and Activities

This week had lots of special events going on. On Tuesday, we had a Me to We Assembly celebrating out successful bake sale fundraiser. Our special guests were David and Vince from the Calgary Dream Centre. They were so excited to meet kids that were passionate about helping the homeless. Our class had lots of great questions for Vince and David and learned a lot more about their work.

A Flashback to Kindergarten

On Wednesday, we had an interesting morning. We got new table legs installed in our room so we went to do our work in the kindergarten room. It was fun and brought back some memories for lots of us!

A Visit from H.D. Cartwright

On Thursday, Grade 6's had a presentation from H.D. Cartwright to learn all about junior high.  They talked to us about transit, clubs, different options, and the athletics programs. At the open house, they set up stations that we got to rotate through. There were some really neat activities.

Weather

It has finally warmed up enough for outdoor lunch and recess breaks.  Please make sure you come prepared for the weather.  It is still chilly and will soon be wet and mucky.  All students will be expected to go outside so boots and outdoor clothes will continue to be needed.

What a busy week!
Have a great weekend.
