February 19th to February 22nd

Room 14's
Weekly Update

Math

This week we did a final day of division practice before we move on to decimals and fractions and see how those concepts are related to division.

We worked on a very intriguing problem that Mrs. Kis learned about at the teacher's convention:

Using the digits 1, 3, 4 and 6, can you make all of the numbers from 1-24 using only addition, subtraction, multiplication and division? You can only use each digit once. You can also insert brackets to make sure you are following BEDMAS.

e.g. 3+4 + 6×1= 13
       3×4 +6 -1=17

We have found all the numbers except 24. We will keep working on it over the weekend. A hint is that we divide something by 4.

Language Arts

We continued with our snack time read aloud book, The World Below. The book is getting very exciting as characters are going missing and encountering new civilizations after an earthquake in the Carlsbad Caverns.

We also kept up with our Book Club reading, including starting some centres with different activities to show our understanding of the vocabulary, plot development and characters in our novels.

We are almost finished our book projects. We can't wait to share our favorite authors and books with other classes and our parents.

Social

We have been learning about the 4 pillars of democracy. Our focus the past two week was on the equity pillar. Last week we participated in conversations around cartoons and pictures. This week we acted out scenarios. Listed below are some of the scenarios we completed and pictures of us acting them out. Ask me about the different scenarios.

The next pillar we are focusing on is the pillar of justice.

We have brainstormed and researched ideas regarding this pillar.

Science

We are almost done creating our science vocabulary games. We are looking forward to presenting our final product to the other classes to show our learning and also to help them learn.

French

We have started our construction of our houses. We are still collecting materials to build our creations. Some of us our trying to figure out how we can make our houses strong enough to hold the materials we want to add on our different floors/levels.

February 11th to February 13th

Welcome back to our weekly update

Math

This week we took a quick look at the traditional long division algorithm and also tried division using the distributive property.
e.g. 255 ÷ 5 = (200 ÷ 5) + (50÷5) +(5÷5)=40+10+1=51

Lots of us found that this is a really fun and easy way to do division because we are working with friendly numbers!

We also did a quick review of the associative property of multiplication:

(3×4)×2= 3×(4×2)

and the commutative property of multiplication:

6×4= 4×6
Language Arts

We focused on the School Wide Write this week in language arts. We planned, wrote and edited our stories about taking a trip to real and imaginary locations. We made sure that there was a main problem and solution in our stories and helped each other to edit our work.

Social

We have been discussing the four pillars of democracy. We focused on equity this week. Ask me about the following cartoons below and ask me about the discussions we had in class regarding them. Here are the questions that led our conversations.

1.What is the problem?
2.What are some possible solutions to the problem?
3.How is the cartoon showing equity?
4.How would you solve the problem? Why?
5.When should procedures not be followed?

6.What does this say about our society?

Physical Education

We wrapped up our dance unit in physical education with a dance showcase. Here are some pictures of our awesome hip hop routine!

Practising before the showcase (during indoor recess)

Buddies

We are working hard at being leaders in our school community and decided to celebrate Valentines Day by passing kindness forward. We made special valentines and presented them to our grade 1/2 buddies.
